Minutes of Orchard Grove Elementary School PTA Meeting
Call to order: The OGES PTA met on Thursday, January 5, 2012 in the OGES cafeteria. Margaret called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.
- Roll Call
- Margaret Torbik, Becky Bostian, Mandy Young, Kyle Bostian, Cheryl Crawford, Julia Piersall, Melissa Hart, Katie Schrader, Elena Fisher, Christine Smith, Myra Foreman, Deanna Scott
- The PTA purposes were read:
- To promote the welfare of the children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship.
- To raise the standards of home life.
- To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
- To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.
- To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.
- Mandy, secretary, presented the minutes of the December 2011 meeting. The minutes were accepted as presented. (Cheryl proposed motion – Katie seconded- motion carried)
- Principal’s report
· Family Fitness night – Jan. 17
· STEM night – April 17 focus on the Common Core Standards – will have local experts with stations – 5:30 -6:30 food 6:30 – 8 stations – need volunteers
- Treasurer’s Report
· Total in bank account $24433.59.
· Bought holiday lunch for custodial and office staff from Panera
· Taking in less money from fund raisers, but spending less
· Had one bounced check bounced for Spirit wear
· Fire House Subs fundraiser brought in $130.54
· Box tops check came in - $1973.15
· School store may need more money this year
· Believe profit was $4570.14 – goal was $5000
· Coupon book profit $3820 – goal was $3900
· Tee shirt profit was $162.40 – goal was $600
· School store profit was $493.07 – goal was $3000
· Kyle will go to the next County PTA meeting to survey who is banking where – may consider changing banks next year - President’s Report
· Shared thank yous from Mrs. Snyder, The Poole and Cartnail families
· Volunteers to serve on a focus group about the Common Core Standards are needed for for a Jan. 12th 7 – 8:30 pm meeting
- Student Directory – 2nd year for creating directory. Will continue to be free (whole school) by email and $3 per grade level paper copy. Estimated distribution date before Valentine’s Day – repairing database- still working on data entry
- Box tops
· Bag system is working will continue using it for future contests
· There is an online contest running now
· Next due date is the end of Feb. – contest starting with a football theme – reward will be tailgating with cookies???
- Enrichment Activities
· Flumpa and Friends – scheduled for a day time show May 16th
· Luis Guray – evening performance 6:30, Feb. 9th - will burn DVD to promote on morning announcements and facebook, put up chairs way back from the stage to allow room for floor seating, get a CD to the music teachers
· Need to send a thank you note to the Charlie Brown crew
· National Children’s Theatre proposed program for day time the first week in June
- Family Involvement
· Bingo?
· Other possible ideas include: more playground play dates, Movie Night
· Cookie exchange went well – 120 dozen donated with 6 volunteers packing and distributing…thanks Julie
- PR – Facebook, FOF, newsletter
· Find Out First comes on out on Friday. Contact Katie to include info. The info needs to be submitted to the school Wednesday mornings.
· Facebook – will promote Luis Guray, Chuck E. Cheese’s. Dance-a-thon
· Newsletter – monthly usually the week before the meeting. Katie needs to submit it the Tuesday before distribution in Thursday folders. Send Katie ideas as you have them.
- School Store – Open daily with school supplies and trinkets.
· Will sell pennants and water bottles at Fitness night
- Fundraising -
· Chuckie E. Cheese’s – Deanna Scott is setting up for Feb. 1 – OGES PTA would 10% percent of the food and tokens – teachers/staff eat free (with badges) – sending home stickers and flyers that will be provided by Chuckie E. Cheese’s and sent to the school 3 weeks before the event– The mouse will make an appearance at dismissal the day of the event
· Believe – the last few error corrections will be shipped Jan. 16th
· Fire House subs – brought in $130.54
· Dance – a – thon – DJ – Vinnie from Good Vibrations is booked. – list of dance groups provided to Melissa – 6 pm registration – dance-a-thon 6:30 – 8:30 – Feb. 24th – committee meeting – Jan. 12th – Santita will send an email blast to notify people about the meeting – Mandy will order tokens and solicit prized from FCPS business partners – already have some prizes raffles – use video and kid announcers to promote on morning announcements
· Roy Rogers again in the spring – maybe in conjunction with the Spring Ice Cream Social
- Grants
· Debbie Bostian Grant – We got it! Money will be used to support the staff in the development of the April STEM night.
- New Business
· Katie will create a survey to send out by email and follow up with a paper version for Thursday folders to probe how attendance could be improved at the monthly PTA meetings
The next PTA meeting will be on Thursday, February 2, 2012 @ 7 p.m. @ OGES cafeteria.
